Effective Communication: Understanding that what is said is not necessarily what is heard

An effective supervisor is a good communicator, but often this competency is not well developed. Strong and effective communication enables employees to clearly understand their roles and responsibilities, and serves to demonstrate respect while building stronger supervisor-employee relationships. Finally, it enables ownership, quality, and engagement. This four-hour class highlights the types of communication a supervisor should master, the cues needed to clarify the message, and active listening techniques to ensure understanding. Finally, it showcases solutions to overcome barriers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify, understand and prepare for the multiple types of communication in the workplace
  • Know how to ensure communication cues are consistent and supportive of the message
  • Recognize and demonstrate active listening techniques to ensure clarity in communication
  • Prevent or mitigate barriers to effective communication
